Ask the right questions on your tour at Countryside Montessori School

Choosing a preschool is a deeply personal decision for families. A tour is an opportunity to understand how a school supports your child’s growth, safety, and emotional well-being. Asking thoughtful questions helps you picture your child in the environment and determine whether the school’s approach aligns with your family’s values and expectations.

At Countryside Montessori School, preschool tours are designed to give parents clarity, comfort, and confidence as they explore their options. Read about the right questions to ask during a preschool tour.

How does the school support each child’s individual development?

Every child learns at their own pace, especially during the preschool years. Ask how teachers observe and respond to individual strengths, interests, and challenges. At a Montessori-based preschool, you may notice an emphasis on independence, choice, and hands-on learning that allows children to grow naturally while still receiving guidance and structure.

What does a typical preschool day look like?

Understanding the daily rhythm can help you decide if the program fits your child’s personality and needs. Consider asking about:

Balance between structured activities and free choice

Opportunities for movement, creativity, and quiet focus

How transitions are handled throughout the day

A clear, consistent routine often helps preschoolers feel secure and confident in their environment.

How are social skills and emotional development encouraged?

Preschool is often a child’s first experience in a group learning setting. Ask how teachers help children build social skills, resolve conflicts, and express their emotions in healthy ways. Look for an approach that emphasizes respect, kindness, and age-appropriate communication, helping children feel heard and supported.

What role do teachers play in the classroom?

Teachers set the tone for your child’s experience. Ask about teacher training, classroom ratios, and how educators interact with students during the day. In a Montessori environment, teachers often act as guides, carefully observing children and offering support when it is most meaningful rather than directing every activity.

How does the school communicate with parents?

Strong communication builds trust between families and schools. You may want to ask how updates are shared, how questions are handled, and how parents are kept informed about their child’s progress. Open, consistent communication can make a big difference in feeling connected to your child’s preschool experience.

What safety and wellness practices are in place?

Peace of mind is essential for parents. During your tour, ask about safety procedures, cleanliness routines, and how the school promotes healthy habits. A well-prepared preschool environment allows children to explore confidently while giving parents reassurance throughout the day.

How does the preschool prepare children for the next stage of learning?

Whether your child will move on to kindergarten or another educational setting, it is helpful to understand how the preschool supports readiness. Ask how the program builds foundational skills such as concentration, independence, and a love of learning that will benefit children long after their preschool years.

Encouraging Independence at Home: Montessori Tips for Summer

Summer provides a wonderful opportunity to help children grow their independence while having fun and staying engaged. At Countryside Montessori School, we believe that Montessori principles don’t have to stop at the classroom door. With a few simple strategies, parents in Great Neck, NY, and Manhasset, NY, can integrate the Montessori philosophy into their child’s summer routine, fostering independence, curiosity, and a love of learning.

           Create a Child-Centered Environment

One of the pillars of Montessori is to create an environment that caters to your child’s independence. At home, this means organizing spaces to be both accessible and functional. Consider setting up a dedicated area where your child can easily access their toys, books, and art supplies. Low shelves and labeled bins help children know exactly where things belong, encouraging responsibility and self-reliance.

           Empower Daily Activities

Enhancing independence isn’t about adding complicated tasks to your child’s day; it’s about involving them in everyday life. Summer is the ideal time to encourage participation in household routines. Children can help prepare meals using tools suited for their size, pour their own water from a small pitcher, or take part in gardening. These activities build fine motor skills, problem-solving abilities, and a sense of accomplishment.

           Introduce Outdoor Independence

Summer is the perfect season to explore nature, which aligns naturally with Montessori’s emphasis on hands-on learning. Encourage your child to explore their surroundings by creating scavenger hunts or helping them start a nature journal. By sparking curiosity about the world, you offer opportunities for self-directed learning while fostering their connection to the environment.

           Establish a Loose Routine

While summer can feel more relaxed, maintaining a basic structure helps children feel secure. We recommend setting a daily schedule that includes time for free play, outdoor activities, quiet reading, and creative projects. This balance allows children to manage their time and develop decision-making skills.

           Encourage Independence Through Choices

Give your child the freedom to make choices throughout the day, whether it’s deciding between two snacks or selecting an afternoon activity from a list. Providing age-appropriate choices encourages autonomy and helps them feel confident in their ability to make decisions.

Wrap Up Your Summer with Montessori

Fostering independence at home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. There is a drastic transformation for children as they transition from toddler to preschool years, especially when it comes to education. Our Montessori school can make the transition from toddler to preschool smooth and seamless by preparing your child for preschool beforehand. Here is what you can expect during the toddler years versus the preschool years at our Montessori school.

Toddlerhood is between one and three years old and is a time of rapid cognitive, emotional, and physical development. This is an important period that shapes a child’s future for learning experiences. Learning through play is the primary way of learning for toddlers. At our Montessori school, learning through play is the foundation of every child’s learning experience. We believe that the developmental needs of toddlers involve being exposed to many hands-on experiences and being encouraged to explore them. These hands-on experiences should include sensory activities and opportunities for the children to socialize with each other. Common activities for toddlers at our Montessori school often include storytelling, music and movement, simple puzzles, and building blocks, all of which contribute to language development, motor skills, and emotional regulation.

The goal of preschool is school readiness, which is equipping children with the skills, knowledge, and attitude needed to be ready for school. Preschools aim to enhance cognitive abilities such as problem-solving, early literacy, and numeracy skills. Preschool-aged children need to have an established routine because children must have a sense of order and predictability to successfully transition to a classroom setting. In recent years there has also been a new aspect of learning introduced to preschoolers which is social-emotional learning. The goal of social-emotional learning is to teach children how to identify and manage their emotions, communicate effectively, and build relationships with peers and adults.

Benefits of Montessori Education for Early Childhood Development

Early childhood is a critical period in human development, and the educational choices made during this time can have long-lasting effects. The Montessori method, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 20th century, has been lauded for its unique approach to early childhood education. This method emphasizes hands-on learning, self-directed activity, and collaborative play. Here, we explore the key benefits of Montessori education for early childhood development.

            Promotes Independence –

One of the core tenets of Montessori education is fostering independence. These classrooms are designed to allow children to choose their activities and work at their own pace. This autonomy helps children develop self-discipline and decision-making skills. The environment is structured in a way that encourages children to take care of their own needs, such as preparing their snacks and cleaning up after themselves, which builds confidence and a sense of responsibility.

Encourages a Love of Learning –

Montessori education nurtures a natural curiosity and a love of learning. Instead of being fed information, children in Montessori settings are guided to discover answers for themselves. This exploratory approach makes learning more engaging and enjoyable, fostering a lifelong passion for knowledge. Children learn through hands-on experiences, which can be more impactful and memorable than traditional rote learning.

            Develops Social Skills –

In Montessori classrooms, children of different ages often learn together. This mixed-age environment promotes social development, as older children have the opportunity to mentor younger ones, and younger children learn from their older peers. This dynamic fosters a sense of community and teaches children to collaborate, communicate, and resolve conflicts effectively.

            Provides a Prepared Environment –

The Montessori classroom, often called the "prepared environment," is meticulously designed to meet the developmental needs of children. The environment includes various learning stations that cater to different areas of development, such as practical life, sensorial, mathematics, language, and cultural studies. Everything in the classroom is child-sized and accessible, allowing children to engage with their surroundings independently.

The Importance of Preschool

Trying to decide if it is worth it to send your child to preschool? Here are a few reasons why preschool is beneficial for your child's development.

Why You Should Send Your Child to Preschool

Preschool is extremely important if you are looking to prepare your child for preschool. When parents send their children to preschool, they help them develop their cognitive skills and social-emotional development.

           Social-Emotional Development:

Attending preschool will give your child the opportunity to socialize with other children their age, which will teach them how to manage their emotions. Communicating with other children their age teaches skills like sharing and empathy. As your child gets older, they need to learn how their actions affect others.

            Cognitive Development:

Preschool teachers will work with your child to prepare them for kindergarten by introducing them to reading and writing. Most preschools will read books to their students and introduce writing letters and numbers. Writing letters and numbers in preschool will start developing the skills your child will need to write in kindergarten.

            Physical Development:

Your child will have a few opportunities while they are at preschool to further develop their gross motor skills. Outside your child will be riding bikes, climbing playground structures, and playing tag, which are just a few opportunities for them to develop their gross motor skills at preschool. There will also be time for your child to develop their fine motor skills. Fine motor skills will be worked on during playtime with activities like painting or coloring and more structured learning like writing letters and numbers.
