Montessori Schools History & Mission for Education

The philosophy for Montessori schools was established by Dr. Maria Montessori, who worked with a group of young children who were deemed unteachable. Through a bit of exploration, Maria soon discovered that children learn best by engaging in education that encourages hands-on learning driven by self-discovery, freedom within a classroom setting, and respect for the child. This setup for early childhood schools is child-centered, instead of the traditional teacher-centered approach to education.

The mission for Montessori schools is for children to receive a personalized education that builds the fundamentals for a lifelong love of learning and success in an educational setting. This type of learning is typically offered to early childhood school-aged children but is also available for infants, toddlers, and secondary school students.

Montessori Education for Children From 18 Months to 3 Years Old

Our toddler program offers early childhood education for children from 18 months (by September) to 3 years old. We accept children from the following areas: Bayside, Flushing, Great Neck, Manhasset, New Hyde Park, and Roslyn, NY areas.

We offer a full day only 2-day program (Tuesday-Thursday), a 3-day program (Monday-Wednesday-Friday) and a 5-day program for all of our preschool students. Students can enroll for a half-day schedule (till noon) or a full-day schedule (till 3 pm). Your child will need to bring their own lunch if enrolled full day which they will be eating in their classroom before nap-time.

The Toddler program teaches your child to become independent by caring for themselves and their classroom. Language starts emerging rapidly in our Toddler classroom due to the daily interactions of your child with others. Our Toddler classroom provides a nurturing and secure environment where your child is free to explore. Students graduating from the Toddler program are very well prepared for our Primary classroom.

We accept children from Great Neck, Manhasset, NY, and the surrounding area.

The Important Benefits of Sending Your Child to Preschool

The brain develops at its most rapid pace in the first few years of life. Research shows that children are born learning and that their early years of life significantly impact their elementary, middle, high school, and college experiences. The first five years are when children develop the essential emotional and social skills they need to succeed in a school environment. Our early childhood school aims to provide your child with the environment, activities and lessons they need, early on.

  • Stimulates Brain Development – Activities in preschool stimulate young children’s brains and contribute to their intellectual, and social development. Between the ages of 3 and 5, the vocabulary of a child grows significantly, and their sentences become longer and more complex. They have more opportunities to sing, read, and converse with students and teachers while being introduced to new vocabulary.

  • Helps Your Child Socially & Emotionally – In preschool, children learn cooperation, respect, and problem-solving skills while interacting with other children and adults. Preschool provides a safe place for your child to learn that they are capable of doing things on their own, and a place where they can learn how to build relationships with other people.

  • Prepares Your Child for Kindergarten – As kindergarten becomes more academic, preschool can be the path to success in the future. Children who attend preschool are generally more eager to learn and are able to handle social interactions and group dynamics better.

  • Provides a Structured Environment – Preschool allows children to be in a structured setting that teaches them to learn, share things, take turns, follow instructions and share their teacher’s attention with peers. It is beneficial for a child to have group experience like this prior to starting kindergarten.

Your child can enjoy these wonderful benefits and more at Countryside Montessori School. Contact us today to enroll in the premier preschool of the Bayside, Flushing, Great Neck, Manhasset, New Hyde Park, and Roslyn, NY area!

Why Choose a Montessori School Over a Traditional School?

When choosing an early childhood schoolschool for their children, parents want the very best. One thing to take into consideration is the choice between a traditional preschool and a Montessori school. While the goal of these schools are to provide learning experiences, the biggest differences are in the kind of learning and the methods of each school.
Montessori School
  • Flexible curriculum
  • Smaller child-teacher ratio
  • Multi-age classrooms
  • Children learn at their own pace
  • Emphasis on cognitive development
  • Children make their own discoveries
  • Learning environment is child-centered
  • Children learn through self-correcting
Traditional School
  • Rigid curriculum
  • Larger child-teacher ratio, usually 25:1
  • Single age classroom
  • Instruction is based on teacher's pace
  • Emphasis on social development
  • Teachers limit independent discovery
  • Learning environment is teacher-centered
  • Reward and punishment is used as motivation
In Montessori schools, the environment tends to be a bit quieter and calmer compared to traditional preschools. This should be taken into consideration when you are determining what school to place your child in. Schools that are too loud, too colorful, or too stimulating may not work best for your child.
